USA Today Features Melanoma Patient Diagnosed by Dr. Pierre-Louis
Skin cancer: Early detection and tracking
© Courtesy of Emily Riggs
Emily Riggs, a Minneapolis-based electrical engineer and mom of two, was 34 years old when she noticed a “different looking” mole on her back.
“I saw it and just had a sense of dread,” Riggs said over the phone. “It wasn't 100% out of left field. I had an uncle I was close with diagnosed with a late stage of melanoma and he, unfortunately, didn’t live much longer after the diagnosis.”
Riggs had just moved to a new town, but she says she “started Googling dermatologists and was lucky to get an appointment right away.”
Sure enough, the suspicious spot was melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer that can spread to other organs rapidly if not treated at an early stage.
“There was a little bit of a feeling like ‘This will never happen to me.’ Like what are the odds? I mean, life is so busy and it's just not something top of mind. It was really scary,” Riggs recalls.
Her new dermatologist successfully operated and removed the melanoma, and Riggs has remained cancer-free for two years. Still, Riggs sees her dermatologist, Dr. Margareth Pierre-Louis, every three months and uses an app the doctor recommended called Miiskin to track skin changes and share hi-res photos securely to the medical team between visits.
© MiiSkin
“I take the photos on the Miiskin app and she sees them on her end. It helps me manage those days and weeks in-between visits and helps manage my worry because I have more control. This is something just so obvious in modern times and makes so much sense.”
Miiskin, which I first reported on last year, uses machine learning, computer vision and augmented reality to help track skin conditions. It’s not meant to diagnose but rather help keep a close eye on any changes – no matter how subtle – to share with your dermatologist or physician.
Miiskin recently launched AI-assisted face-tracking to manage – and follow the evolution and treatment of – skin conditions including possible skin cancers, acne and rosacea, as well as more aesthetic problems such as receding hairlines. This is especially noteworthy because most apps in the medical aesthetics and beauty industries exist as simple try-on tools, such as hair and makeup apps.
You can use the free basic version or unlock all the advanced features with Miiskin Premium. The Premium version is $25 per year and comes with a 30-day free trial.

Minneapolis Dermatologist Named United States Business and Medical Advisor for Miiskin
Twin Cities Dermatology Center is the second clinic in the US to launch Miiskin App service for its patients.
Minneapolis, August 11, 2021 – Twin Cities Dermatology Center launched telehealth app Miiskin Pro in March 2021 and has seen excitement and an influx of app use from patients, new and established. The successful integration of Miiskin into the Center has led Miiskin to recognize Twin Cities Dermatology Center founder and medical director Dr. Margareth Pierre-Louis, MD, MBA, FAAD, as US Medical and Business Advisor for Miiskin. This announcement came after the Center started to utilize the app not only for personalized patient self-monitoring but also to facilitate efficient and effective dermatology care triage.
As the second clinic in the US to provide Miiskin access to its patients, Twin Cities Dermatology Center is transforming dermatology care delivery and disease monitoring with the smartphone app. Miiskin provides patients with the most sophisticated telehealth technology available for self-monitoring skin lesions and other visible problems. In addition to high resolution skin image capture, Miiskin enables patients to share images with their dermatologist. This ability to grant access to images to their provider facilitates timely intervention and professional support when patient concerns arise. Dr. Pierre-Louis states, “ I believe in Miiskin because it’s innovative technology empowers patients to self-monitor their skin while enabling us to support them through direct access to their dermatologist.”
Featured in Dermatology Advisor Magazine in July 2021, Dr. Pierre-Louis commented, “A telehealth solution like Miiskin, an AI-enabled app, levels the playing field by giving every patient equipped with a smartphone a tool that empowers them to evaluate their skin for changes for the early detection of worrisome lesions.” Even though telehealth can help improve the management of dermatological diseases, there are limitations in its use. Dr. Pierre-Louis explains, “While it is a HIPAA-compliant platform, Miiskin is not a medical visit and does not confirm treatment or disease management. Miiskin is an innovative resource that dermatologists can offer their patients to improve patient access to care and promote patient engagement.”
For years, the dermatology specialty has been plagued with long appointment wait times, delays in care intervention, and also disparities in care delivery. Dermatologists comprise 1% of the US physician workforce and most of these challenges have been linked to a shortage of dermatologists. Miiskin App addresses these challenges by connecting the patient and the dermatologist on a smartphone-based telehealth platform. With reportedly 80% of American’s equipped with smartphones, Miiskin has the potential to positively transform and disrupt the dermatology specialty. The visible nature of dermatology and the ability for Miiskin to capture high resolution skin images can support access to care and expedite care delivery. Not only are patients empowered to self-monitor their health through image capture, but they also can share concerns directly with their dermatologist for efficient evaluation and intervention.
Dr. Pierre-Louis will be an essential asset to Miiskin as it expands its foothold in the US telehealth space and beyond. As a board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist with specialized training in hair disorders, Dr. Pierre-Louis has used various telehealth platforms to care for patients since 2016, including SkyMD, Teladoc, and her homegrown platform at Twin Cities Dermatology Center. Her duties entail bringing new ideas to Miiskin leadership to improve dermatology care management and enhancing Miiskin’s application to other dermatological conditions, such as acne, rashes, hair loss, and aesthetics.
How to Access the Miiskin App for Twin Cities Dermatology Center
Search for “Miiskin” in the Google Play or Apple App store, download the app for free, and register using the office code TCD8. Full access to Miiskin remains free for all Twin Cities Dermatology Center patients and access to images can be granted to Twin Cities Dermatology Center providers.

Local Dermatologist Providing Free Skin Cancer Screenings for Melanoma Monday
Twin Cities Dermatology Center’s fully vaccinated staff are one of the only Twin Cities practices offering this service during Skin Cancer Awareness Month
WHAT:
May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and Twin Cities Dermatology Center is providing free skin cancer screenings to residents on Melanoma Monday (May 3, 2021). The COVID-19 pandemic caused skin cancer screenings across the board to drop by more than 86 percent last year. However, the threat of melanoma is ever-present and Twin Cities Dermatology Center continues to raise awareness about skin cancer in general, especially around this important annual day. This year, the practice is one of the only clinics offering free screenings in the local area, and its fully vaccinated staff has taken the necessary steps to bring back the initiative while ensuring patients remain safe while visiting the clinic.
The event is on a first-come, first-service basis. To schedule a screening, patients can call the clinic at (612) 268-5005.
Board-certified dermatologist, dermatopathologist and medical director of Twin Cities Dermatology Center, Dr. Margareth Pierre-Louis is leading this year’s practice-sponsored screening. With a mantra of “Visible Wellness for All", it's her mission to put evidence-based, expert dermatology within everyone’s reach. Her staff will educate patients about their skin and examine any lesions of concern. After the evaluation, the staff will provide recommendations based on their findings.
Patients of Twin Cities Dermatology Center will also receive access to Miiskin, an AI/AR-enabled telehealth solution offered free to patients by the practice to allow them to continue monitoring their skin health in between doctor visits. Using the smartphone app, patients capture high-quality photos of their skin to monitor for changes from home and send concerning updates to their dermatologist.

Twin Cities Dermatology Center Adopts New Telehealth Solution, Miiskin, Providing Safe and Efficient Access to Hi-Res Patient Skin Images
Telehealth solution securely stores and forwards hi-def images, adding clarity and value to in-person and virtual appointments
MINNEAPOLIS, March 9, 2021 -- As telehealth visits continue into 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, dermatology practices, in particular, are looking for new ways to help patients track skin changes and wound healing from afar. Announced today, Twin Cities Dermatology Center, a dermatologist office led by Dr. Margareth Pierre-Louis, MD, MBA, FAAD, has implemented the new Miiskin PRO telehealth solution to help patients track and manage skin changes.
Miiskin, the world’s most popular AI-based digital health platform for tracking skin changes, designed the Miiskin PRO telehealth solution to be both patient-friendly and clinically valuable by streamlining the process of patients taking high-res photos of their skin and sending them to dermatologists.
The hands-on nature of a dermatology appointment introduces new challenges for dermatologists like Dr. Pierre-Louis. The quality of video conferencing tools is not enough to provide dermatologists with the video clarity they need to accurately assess their patients’ skin health. With Miiskin PRO, dermatologists can offer free use of Miiskin to their patients and then access the high-quality photo diaries taken by the patient at home with their smartphone. The app allows high-quality photo capture of moles, wounds, and wider skin areas that may require monitoring or specific attention. Patient self-monitoring of their skin in between either in-person or virtual appointments allows them to identify concerns that need discussion with their dermatologist.
“Our practice’s integration of Miiskin PRO demonstrates how world-class dermatology can be achieved through global collaboration of professionals with a shared goal of regular skin monitoring and reducing skin cancer mortalities,” said Dr. Margareth Pierre-Louis. “‘Visible wellness for all’ is a phrase we use often within our practice as it’s our belief that all of our patients matter equally, as we are all susceptible to skin cancer. Miiskin PRO is an extension of our practice’s mission as it allows us to improve our patients’ virtual visits by providing capture and storage of high-quality patient photographs taken over time, allowing for accurate diagnosis and more informed decision-making for all skin conditions.”
Twin Cities Dermatology Center Patient Emily using the Miiskin App
As an Irish redhead, Minneapolis resident and patient of Twin Cities Dermatology Emily Riggs is no stranger to freckles and moles, especially on her back. However, 18 months ago she noticed a mark on her back that was much darker and looked different from the rest of her moles. It turned out to be melanoma and she underwent a wide local excision to have it removed. Now, she sees Dr. Pierre-Louis every three months to monitor the rest of her spots to ensure it hasn’t spread.
“I was really excited when Dr. Pierre-Louis told me about the new Miiskin PRO technology available through her office because of how diligent I’ve now become about regularly tracking my skin changes,” said Emily. “As a busy mom, I’m always looking for efficient technologies and easy to use solutions for my health, and I love that it allows me to securely send any concerning images directly to Dr. Pierre-Louis if I see a new or changing spot in between my regular appointments.”
Miiskin is compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Dermatologists can easily access the photos through the Miiskin platform which can be integrated with the electronic health record (EHR) system. Miiskin users and their dermatologists can confidently leverage the convenience of the app to share images in a more secure way than simply emailing them as many patients have traditionally done.
Miiskin launched for consumers in 2015 to track skin changes on their own using photos as a way to keep up with skin self-examination recommendations. Miiskin has been recommended by dermatologists for its focus on accurately capturing images of the skin for up-to-date skin health history without making diagnoses. Patients love how easy the app is to use, including its voice-guided, hands-free full-body photo capture feature, Automatic Skin Imaging, used to track wide-areas of skin where it can be challenging to catch a new mole or concerning change. Miiskin is proud to partner with The Skin Cancer Foundation to educate people about the importance of skin cancer early detection.
“Our HIPAA-compliant integration into practices has been a goal for Miiskin since the beginning of our journey, and we’re thrilled to have Twin Cities Dermatology Center deploying this solution for their patients,” said Jon Friis, founder of Miiskin. “Skin cancers and other concerning spots or lesions don’t discriminate. Patients use our platform as a simple way to be diligent about skin health and are the first line of defense in identifying concerns to bring to the dermatologist. Empowering dermatologists and patients to better interact in addressing these concerns is a big step toward ending skin cancer mortality.”
How to Get the Miiskin App via Twin Cities Dermatology Center
Search for “Miiskin” in the Google Play or Apple App store, download the app for free, and register using code TCD1. Please note, the app is free for six months if you register using the code TCD1. The app will always remain free for all Twin Cities Dermatology Center patients.

Dermatologist Engages Young Minds to Promote Visible Wellness
On December 15, 2020, Dr. Margareth Pierre-Louis, board-certified Dermatologist and Medical Director of Twin Cities Dermatology Center, spoke to more than 60 kindergartners at Aquila Elementary School via Zoom. The invitation was from Aquila kindergarten teacher and founder/director of Aquila Theater Arts Mrs. Rachel Haen, who requested that Dr. Pierre-Louis help her school’s kindergartners explore skin. Aquila is a charter elementary school in Saint Louis Park, MN, and is known for its diverse student population and education that emphasizes understanding and accepting of differences among people.
Dr. Pierre-Louis engaged a group of attentive children, parents, and kindergarten teachers that morning, on the biggest Zoom call of her life. After introducing Dr Pierre-Louis to the Aquila community, Mrs. Haen asked questions and Dr. Pierre-Louis answered them to teach about the layers of skin and its role in keeping us healthy. One of the most exciting highlights from the morning event was expressing to everyone the importance of skin as an outer covering we all share and how it positively defines us, regardless of its skin color or hue. Dr. Pierre-Louis explained that skin color is a biological feature from the geographic location a human being genetically originated from in relation to the equator. Dr. Pierre-Louis appreciated Mrs. Haen’s image of the box of crayons of different shades that were all labeled “flesh,” symbolizing how we are all the same inside regardless of the shade of our outer coat. Mrs. Haen asked about hair and Dr. Pierre-Louis explained that hair is an extension of skin and also a genetic feature present to keep the body warm and protected, with more hair present on some human beings than other, similar to fur on some other mammals.
Dr. Pierre-Louis ended the event emphasizing that skin colors and tones are essential for human existence on Earth, similar to all the essential and blended colors of a rainbow. Without variations in skin color, humans would not be able to survive on certain parts of the Earth which require lighter or darker skin tones for survival. As we all prepare for a new year and work together to end the COVID-19 pandemic, this virtual event empowered our youngest minds to respect all people and that skin unites us. Dr. Pierre-Louis created the term Visible Wellness to capture an individual’s overall wellbeing in 2017. Visible Wellness reflects internal and external health, most evident through healthy skin. Winter Wonderment Second Annual Spectacular Happy Hour
Celebrating Visible Wellness For All at Twin Cities Dermatology Center!
December 1, 2019: Minneapolis, MN
After Tragedy, Top Dermatologist Puts Spotlight on Mental Health this Holiday Season.
On December 10th, Twin Cities Dermatology Center is hosting the 2nd annual Winter Wonderment. This public happy hour event will celebrate visible wellness with live demonstrations, special promotions, prizes, and showcase the best in medical dermatology. This annual event has new meaning for the Center’s founder and Top Doctor Margareth Pierre-Louis. Last December, Dr. Pierre-Louis’ 23-year-old cousin was found dead by police. Her first reaction to the news was disbelief. Who or what had hurt her beautiful godchild, especially during the holiday season? Her cousin had taken her own life with a gunshot wound to the heart over the Christmas holiday. As the first anniversary of her cousin’s death approaches, Dr. Pierre-Louis wants to celebrate each life and encourage people to look beyond the gifts and parties. She wants people to see their loved ones as human beings in need of genuine love and support. One way to achieve this is to raise awareness about visible health and wellness.
Dr. Pierre-Louis is a board-certified dermatologist who has seen thousands of patients in both academic and private practice. She has witnessed firsthand the impact of physical, mental, and social health on patients’ visible appearance. Patients suffering from depression, substance abuse, and relationship challenges may neglect hygiene, ignore health problems, and delay medical intervention. Dermatologic conditions, such as seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, skin aging, and hair loss, may onset or worsen with mental illness. In response, she created the term visible health in 2017. Visible health is the visible manifestation of a person’s health due to physical, mental, and social factors. Visible wellness is a person’s overall wellbeing inside and out. Visible wellness requires self-love, self-care, disease treatment and prevention, healthy relationships, and work-life balance.
However, visible wellness is not only about how one looks and feels. It is also about being accounted for by loved ones and being accountable for loved ones. Unlike physical illness, which may present with visible signs of disease, mental illness may not be apparent to others except for changes in physical appearance and behavior. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 90% of those who die by suicide had shown signs of mental illness to loved ones. When physical contact with loved ones is brief or infrequent, warning signs of mental illness may go undetected until it is too late. We can account for loved ones by addressing changes in their appearance and behavior but must first be physically available to observe their visible health.
Dr. Pierre-Louis’ cousin had no known history of mental illness and her reason for suicide is unknown. The timing of her suicide after several months of withdrawal from family may have been influenced by the holiday season. NAMI reports that 64% of people with a history of mental illness feel their conditions worsen during the holidays. Financial stress related to shopping, gifting, traveling, and attending gatherings may cause anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Family and work expectations during the holidays may also negatively impact mental health. The National Institute of Mental Health includes withdrawal from people and extreme changes in behavior as potential warning signs for suicide. Dr. Pierre-Louis wonders if her cousin’s life could have been saved if someone had been accountable for her wellbeing.
This holiday season, Dr. Pierre-Louis urges everyone to remember their loved ones. It all starts with accountability for our personal visible health and the visible health of those we love. Go beyond sending a text message, gift, or social media post. Know where your loved ones are and how they are spending the holidays. If possible, see your loved ones and engage them in heartfelt conversation. Spend time with them to evaluate their visible health and offer love and support if needed. Reciprocally, if the holiday season feels challenging, contact those you love and who care about you. Ask for help before social withdrawal leads to isolation from those who love you. Make this truly the most wonderful time of year by promoting visible wellness for all.
All are invited to Winter Wonderment on Tuesday, December 10th. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Dr. Pierre-Louis and learn more about her passion to help everyone achieve visible wellness. Celebrate visible health this holiday season so that everyone may live their longest and healthiest life. RSVP at twincitiesderm.com.

Dermatology Center Launches Integrative Triple Threat Approach & Leverages Technology to Disrupt Brick-Mortar Healthcare
Twin Cities Dermatology Center, PA, opened its doors this spring in the thriving 36th Street community at the intersection of Minneapolis and St Louis Park. The Center offers medical, surgical, cosmetic, and diagnostic services for all ages under one single specialty clinic roof. What makes the Center unique are its extension of dermatological services via telemedicine and its fully electronic operational platform, disrupting the traditional delivery of healthcare through brick and mortar. Online technology is leveraged to the max and facilitates virtual visits while eliminating all paper forms or the need for a receptionist to schedule your appointment. The comprehensive integration of services (clinical dermatology, teledermatology, and dermatopathology) coupled with the latest technology is patient-centered and increases access, promotes continuity, and centralizes care.
The use of automated online technology in healthcare has become popular among patients equipped with smart phones and other mobile devices. Online appointment booking offers convenience while access to electronic health records keeps patients informed. Teledermatology, the remote delivery of dermatology care via technology, leads the telemedicine industry in consumer demand and growth. Teledermatology increases access to care and has the potential to improve outcomes and reduce healthcare costs. The Center provides flexibility in care delivery with services offered both in the clinic setting and via telemedicine. The clinic setting directly supports teledermatology and ensures a reliable location for patient follow-up. In addition to clinical dermatology and teledermatology, providing dermatopathology (microscopic diagnostic services) through the Center further promotes care centralization for accuracy and efficient disease management.
The Center was founded by board-certified dermatologist Margareth Pierre-Louis, MD, MBA, FAAD, and aspires to become the premier dermatology clinic in the Twin Cities. Dr. Pierre-Louis was born in Haiti and grew up in Naples, Florida. She attended Duke University for both undergraduate in biology and graduate school in business administration. She earned her MD at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Dr. Pierre-Louis moved to Minneapolis in 2010 to complete her internship at Hennepin County Medical Center followed by dermatology residency at the University of Minnesota. After three years of practice in the Twin Cities, she went on to complete a dermatopathology fellowship at Washington University in St Louis School of Medicine. Her training reflects a deep understanding of dermatological disorders with extensive research completed in the area of hair diseases. Dr. Pierre-Louis is passionate about her specialty and aims to put evidence-based, expert dermatology within everyone’s reach. Licensed in fifteen states, she has seen thousands of patients in the clinic setting and has cared for over a thousand patients through telemedicine. Twin Cities Dermatology Center is accepting new patients and plans to partner with other providers in the metropolitan area to deliver exceptional dermatology care.
